Nicaragua faces epidemics after flooding

In the aftermath of flooding caused by back-to-back disasters (Hurricane Felix followed by two tropical depressions) the Ministry of Health (MINSA) is working intensely to control epidemics.

An outbreak of leptospirosis on the Pacific Coast has affected 2,700 people in the last 12 days, causing 10 deaths so far. The majority of cases are concentrated in Somotillo, Telica, El Sauce and Achuapa in the departments of Chinandega and Leon however eight departments are affected by the epidemic.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that is commonly carried in animals. Humans become infected   through contact with water, food, or soil containing urine from infected animals.  Leptospirosis is potentially deadly however it is treatable with antibiotics.

The Institute John XXIII has responded to the epidemic by supplying antibiotics to the affected areas.  The Ministry of Health reports that the epidemic is now under control and is initiating clean up efforts to control dengue.  Thanks to all who have contributed to Quest for Peace disaster relief effort for helping to make this life-saving action possible.
