Humanitarian Assistance
Since 1983 the Quest constituents have sent to Nicaragua more than 500 cargo containers (semi-trailers) of material aid such as food, clothing, medicine, and tools, in excess of 10,000 tons.
In 1999 through 2002 the Quest sent 55 twenty-ton cargo containers of material aid to assist in reconstruction work after Hurricane Mitch. Supplies included vegetable seeds for replanting, household goods for newly constructed homes, clothing for refugees, and 240 tons of rice to sustain a network of 29 orphanages for children and homes for elderly people. Now, instead of sending U.S. rice, we send the equivalent money so Nicaraguan rice can be purchased and distributed.
The Clean Your Desk campaign gathers used and new school supplies for rural Nicaraguan children. In 1999 - 2002, the Quest delivered supplies valued at $5 million. The products make school attendance possible for thousands of rural children whose families lack funds to buy basic school supplies.
After Hurricane Mitch's devastation in November 1998, the Institute of John XXIII and Quest began Networks of Hope, a four-year process of reconstruction in 30 hard-hit northern municipalities. More than 1,800 homes have been built, food production restored and new levels of cooperation achieved among local organizations and officials.
